Bed bugs are pesky creatures and can be difficult to spot. It’s important to keep an eye out and if you suspect you have bed bugs, call a pest control in Sacramento!

Bed bugs are spread in public areas and live in furniture and clothing. Hotels, colleges, summer camps and other public places with furniture have more potential for infestation. Bed bugs can be transferred on clothes or in objects like suitcases and moving boxes. It is impossible to avoid things like sleeping in a hotel, however if someone sees early signs of bed bugs they may be able to avoid a total infestation.

Bed bugs can be hard to find, especially in early stages, however there are still some tools and tips for detecting bed bugs:

  1. If you wake up with new bites in the morning or find many little bites in one area, this may be the result of bed bugs. Bed bug occurrence can not be assumed from bites alone but if bites do occur, this could be a reason to investigate further.

  2. Check for dark spots found on furniture. Bed bugs leave behind a dark liquid that will look like dark spots on areas they are active. Bed bugs also leave behind skin that has been shed, like when a snake sheds its skin.

  3. The only time they will leave behind red blood stains is if they have been crushed before the bug has digested the blood meal.  This is comparable to a mosquito being squished with blood still in it.

  4. After staying somewhere or having someone stay with you, check beds and furniture weeks after traveling or having guests. Bed bugs may go undetected when there are only a few, but months later they will grow into a colony of many bed bugs and become easier to spot and more of a problem.

  5. When inspecting beds and upholstered furniture examine the mattress and areas along the edges. Next check the box spring and pay close attention to the four corners and underside.

  6. The only way to know for sure if you have a bed bug infestation is by finding a live bed bug. This can be done by using interception devices, active monitors, or box spring and mattress encasements. In order to get a thorough inspection call a professional.
